Qualifying Examination, Thesis/Dissertation and Foreign Language Exam
- Is there a minimum or maximum amount of time to take the Qualifying Examination for a doctorate?
No. Before taking the exam, the student must have:
- Completed 36 credits;
- A review or research article, in their research area, accepted for publication or published within the last five years.
- Are master's degree students required to take the Qualifying Examination?
The Qualifying Examination is obligatory. For more information see Resolution No. 114 "Master's Qualifying Examination Rule”
- How much time should a student take to present an article for the Qualifying Examination board?
The student must present the article within a maximum of 50 minutes, after which questions are asked of the student by the Examining Board, with each examiner having up to 40 minutes to report his/her considerations.
- Can the article for the Qualifying Examination be submitted to any scientific journal, that is, any on Qualis?
At least B5.
- Should the doctoral or master's student be the first author of the article derived from the Qualifying Examination?
Not necessary.
- Does the Qualifying Examination board need to have an external member?
No, the examining board is preferably composed of PGB professors.
- Can a student have an article referring to one of the thesis/dissertation chapters already submitted or accepted for publication before the defense?
Yes, as long as there are other unpublished articles.
- Is there a model for the Qualifying Examination?
The article must be prepared according to the instructions of the scientific journal to which it will be submitted for publication. The standards must be attached. Cover template is on the website under Form / Qualifying Examination.
- Can the article of the Qualifying Examination be part of the thesis?
No. The Qualifying Examination article can be a theme or article parallel to the thesis.
- When should I schedule at the BCE to make the Catalog Card?
Right after the Defense, the student should call the BCE and schedule the cataloging, considering that the schedules are very time consuming, which will result in the non-compliance with the deadline for the delivery of the final version to the PGB.
- Do I need to prove proficiency in English in for a master’s or doctorate?
No. The proof of proficiency occurs through an exam of an eliminatory or classificatory character in the selection of the master's degree, and the master's proficiency is used for the doctorate.
- Can the change in titling and apostille be optional?
No. Titling and apostille are part of Resolution 009/2018-CI/CCB.
